Celebrating Student Excellence: LVA’s Class of 2025 Scholarship Recipients

At the seventeenth annual commencement of Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter School, members of our Board proudly presented special awards to four outstanding seniors.

The Education Foundation of Lehigh Valley Academy has worked tirelessly throughout the year to raise funds to ensure four scholarships could be awarded to deserving students. After the fundraising phase, the scholarship committee carefully reviewed all submitted applications. To maintain fairness and objectivity, all applications were anonymous—so that awards were granted based solely on merit.

This year, the selection process was especially difficult. We received a high volume of impressive applications from students who not only met the criteria but exceeded expectations. In the end, four students stood out and were each selected to receive a $1,500 scholarship, which will be paid directly to their chosen post-secondary institution.

The first scholarship was generously donated by the Lehigh Valley Private Equity Fund. The remaining three scholarships were sponsored by Metz Culinary Management, Arbor Insurance, and Tejas Gosai, also representing Lehigh Valley Private Equity Fund. We are incredibly grateful for their support and commitment to our students’ success.

We also want to thank every student who took the time to apply. Your ambition and dedication made the decision incredibly challenging, and we look forward to awarding even more scholarships next year.

Curiosity Cube Brings AI-Focused STEM Exploration to LVA!

The Curiosity Cube is back! Lehigh Valley Academy recently welcomed this exciting mobile science lab, developed by MilliporeSigma, for a two-day visit that brought the future of technology straight to our campus.

Housed in a 22×10-foot retrofitted shipping container, the Curiosity Cube® is a traveling laboratory offering hands-on experiments led by real scientists. The mission? To spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of STEM leaders through interactive learning—and it definitely delivered!

This year’s theme focused on artificial intelligence, and our 4th, 5th, and middle school students dove into experiments that helped them better understand how AI is being used in real-world scenarios.

2025 AI-Themed Experiments Included:

  • Match Game / Think Like AI: Students explored how machine learning works by discovering how AI can recognize patterns and learn from data—just like the human brain!
  • AI and Self-Driving Vehicles: Using Ozobots, students created custom paths for these tiny robots to safely travel to and from school, mimicking the decision-making process of self-driving cars.
  • Guess Who?! Real or AI? In this fun and challenging experiment, students had to decide whether images were real or AI-generated—sparking discussions about digital literacy and the evolving role of AI in media and art.

A Look Back: The 2023 Visit

This isn’t the first time the Curiosity Cube visited LVA! Back in 2023, the mobile lab arrived with a focus on environmental contamination, offering students the chance to explore the impact of pollution and germs on our daily lives.

2023 Contamination-Themed Experiments Included:

  • Exploring environmental contamination in everyday materials and surroundings.
  • Using VR technology to identify contaminants on classroom surfaces and learn prevention methods.
  • Testing beverages for contamination using real scientific instruments.

The 2023 visit helped students make meaningful connections between science and real-life issues—like food safety, sanitation, and environmental responsibility.

MilliporeSigma says one of the major goals of the Curiosity Cube is to close the hands-on science gap in Title 1 schools, where more than half of students often miss out on STEM opportunities. Another priority is helping fuel interest in science-based careers, as STEM jobs are projected to grow twice as fast as non-STEM jobs according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Who knew a 22×10-foot shipping container could be so fun?

Touring across North America, Europe, and now Africa, the Curiosity Cube brings STEM to life for over 60,000 students. Since its launch in 2017, it has reached more than 230,000 students across 14 countries. Feedback shows that 88% of students express a greater interest in science after participating.

We’re honored to be a part of this global experience once again and so proud of the enthusiasm and curiosity our students brought to each experiment.

Thank you to MilliporeSigma and the Curiosity Cube team for continuing to make science exciting and accessible!

LVA Welcomes Bestselling Author Andrea Davis Pinkney

On a day that will be remembered by many of our students for years to come, LVA had the absolute honor of welcoming Andrea Davis Pinkney—a New York Times bestselling author, Coretta Scott King Award winner, and true icon in the world of children’s literature.

Pinkney is renowned for her compelling stories that celebrate African-American culture and history, with a powerful body of work that includes picture books, novels, and nonfiction. Beyond writing, she has made a lasting mark as a publisher and editor, founding the groundbreaking Jump at the Sun imprint at Hyperion Books for Children. Her contributions to literature have earned her multiple NAACP Image Award nominations and an induction into the New York State Writers Hall of Fame.

During her visit, our elementary students were treated to an engaging and heartfelt presentation where Pinkney shared her writing journey, the inspirations behind her stories, and the importance of using literature as a tool for empowerment and education. Students were captivated by her energy, inspired by her wisdom, and left the assembly with bright smiles and big dreams.

But the excitement didn’t stop there!

Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students were given a very special experience—a private luncheon with Mrs. Davis Pinkney herself! During this intimate gathering, students chatted with the author about their favorite books, asked thoughtful questions about her career, and gained insights from a true literary legend. As a memorable finale to the event, each student received a signed copy of one of her books to treasure for years to come.

We are incredibly grateful to Andrea Davis Pinkney for taking the time to visit our school and share her brilliance with our young readers. Her stories, passion, and presence made a lasting impact on our students and staff, reminding us all of the power of literature to inspire, uplift, and connect.

Fueling Success: Free Breakfast and Lunch at LVA!

Did you know? One of the many amazing benefits of being part of the LVA community is that every student in grades K–12 receives free nutritious meals every day—that includes both breakfast and lunch.

At LVA, we believe no student should start—or go through—their day feeling hungry. That’s why we offer:

  • Free Breakfast: Available each morning through our school cafés and breakfast carts.
  • Free Lunch: Served daily to all students, with balanced options that meet USDA nutritional standards.

Why this matters:

  1. Improved Academic Performance
    • Students who eat balanced meals are more focused, have better memory retention, and perform better on tests.
  2. Fewer Nurse Visits
    • Regular, nutritious meals help prevent headaches and fatigue that can come from skipping meals.
  3. Less Stress at Home
    • Families can rely on school-provided meals, easing the pressure of packing food each day.
  4. Support for Busy Students
    • Whether students have long bus rides, morning clubs, or early practices, meals at school help them stay energized and ready to learn.

Each breakfast and lunch includes a variety of USDA-approved options such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and milk to fuel students through their day.

Remind your student to visit the cafés and breakfast carts during arrival and enjoy a healthy lunch in the cafeteria—both are completely free.

At Lehigh Valley Academy, we’re not just supporting education in the classroom—we’re nourishing every student to help them succeed throughout the day.

Why Staying on the LVA Waiting List is Crucial

We know how tough it can feel to stay optimistic when your child isn’t selected through Lehigh Valley Academy’s lottery process. But if you’re truly hoping for a chance to enroll at LVA, it’s very important to remain on our waiting list and reapply each school year — because spots do become available.

Each grade level is capped at a certain number. If a current student leaves the school during the year, the next eligible student on the waiting list for that grade is contacted to fill the opening. This happens more often than you might think — which is why your placement on the waiting list matters.

However, please note:

  • Being on the waiting list for the current school year does not automatically transfer to the next.
  • You must renew or submit a new application each year to be included in the admissions lottery and to retain your place on the waiting list.
  • If you missed the application deadline for this year (March 3, 2025), you can still submit a new application to be placed on the waiting list for the following fall.

You can fill out your child’s application easily through our Admissions Application Portal, which can be accessed on our website at www.lvacademy.org. We also highly recommend attending one of our Admissions Information Sessions to get a deeper understanding of our process and what makes LVA unique. Missed a session? No problem! Click the link below for more info!

Understanding Our Admissions Process

LVA is a public, non-profit charter school, and our enrollment process follows guidelines set by our charter and Pennsylvania Charter School Law.

If applications exceed the number of available seats, a lottery is held. Participation in the lottery requires all required forms to be completed by the application deadline.

Students are enrolled or placed on the waiting list in this order:

  1. Siblings of students who are currently enrolled at LVA and who live at the same address as the LVA sibling in Bethlehem Area or Saucon Valley School Districts receive first preference. If there are more siblings than openings at a grade level, a sibling lottery takes place.
  2. Siblings of students currently enrolled who resided in other districts receive second preference.
  3. Students from Bethlehem Area School District and Saucon Valley School District (LVA’s Chartering Districts).
  4. Students from other school districts.

As classroom openings occur during the school year, families on the waiting list are contacted.

Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter School reserves the right to verify residency during the enrollment process per state guidelines.

We know this process requires patience, but we are so grateful for your continued interest in LVA. Your perseverance and commitment to your child’s education does not go unnoticed.

Stay hopeful, stay engaged — and thank you for considering Lehigh Valley Academy.

If you have questions, we’re always here to help.

Thank you again for considering LVA for your child’s education.

Exploring Health Care Career Pathways at Moravian University

Last month, students from Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter School had the opportunity to visit Moravian University as part of our Health Care Career Pathways program. This enriching experience gave students a closer look at what a future in the healthcare field could look like—and they loved every second of it.

From hands-on activities to meaningful conversations, the visit helped students connect the knowledge they’re gaining in their high school classrooms with real-world applications.

“My favorite part was how helpful everyone was to answering questions.”

“It was very hands-on at Moravian University and it was interactive.”

“I enjoyed getting to see Moravian’s campus, especially the nursing floor. I really liked seeing the simulation lab and getting to interact with the medical dummies.”

Thanks to the incredible team at Moravian—Deb Halliday, David Wilkenfeld, Louise Keegan, and Kaylee L.—our students were not only engaged but inspired. Kaylee, in particular, left a lasting impression:

“This genuinely made me confident in my choice that Moravian is the school for me. Kailee was such a resource and she is the sweetest and assured me and taught me so much. I want to go to this school so bad I can’t wait to graduate.”

Students practiced using stethoscopes on simulated patients and saw state-of-the-art medical technology in action.

“…enjoyed using the stethoscope on the simulated patients.”

And the impact was undeniable—
100% of students agreed that after this experience, they have more interest in health care careers than before.

We are incredibly grateful for the partnership and support from Moravian University. Opportunities like this one help us continue to inspire the next generation of health care professionals. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, time, and passion with our students!
